Page 8 CLINCH VALLEY TIMES, St. Paul, VA, Thursday, December 22, 2011 Letters to Santa... Adult Education Connection by Karen Gent i Technology garter ir .... ,/ r / / On November 19, 2011, the PluggedIn VA entrepreneurship and technology classes spent a cultural day in Abingdon, Vir- ginia. As part 'of the students' training in business etiquette, this field trip provided an opportunity for the students to practice many of their newly acquired professional skills. It also gave them an occasion for which to wear their business attire, which had been pur- chased with a clothing allow- ance earlier in the program. The day's events began with a visit to Heartwood, a facility that showcases Southwest Vir- ginia's traditional music, orig- inal crafts, and regional cuisine. After enjoying lunch at Heart- wood, the students were ready to embark on the next phase of their adventure. Followin the departure Entreprineurship Barter from Heartwood, the group traveled to the historic Barter Theatre on Main Street to watch "A Christmas Carol." The stu- dents had been equipped for this event by a lesson in theater etiquette. Artistic Director Rich- ard Rose recognized the group of attendees from Southwest Regional Adult Education and Southwest Virginia Community College. The students and staff were able to experience Rose's adaptation of Charles Dickens' classic tale. Through the play, they followed Ebenezer Scro- oge on his ghost-guided look into his past, present and future intended to resurrect his long lost Christmas spirit. After the play, the students were treated to dinner at the Tuscan Italian Grill. In pre- paration for the event, the students had studied table trip manners and table settings. As part of the programs technology coursework, each student had been required to go online, preview the restaurant's menu, make a menu selection, and email the selection to the rest- aurant. During dinner, the stu- dents practiced the skills of making introductions, being good conversationalists, and using proper table manner. The day was filled with lots of smiles, laughter and ap- preciation. The students were able to let their professional skills shine with confidence and ease as a result of the training they have received in Pluggedln VA.
