Scott Jessee - Agriculture 2009 Quality Assured Cattlemen's Conference During the past year, over forty producers have marketed their calves in the Virginia Quality Assured Feeder Pro- gram. Now that the feeder cattle marketing season has slowed down, the 2009 Quality Assured Cattlemen's Conference has been scheduled. This meeting will be held on Thursday, Dec- ember 10 at the Russell County Vocational School (Building #1 -Auditorium) at 6:30 p.m. C.W. Dinner will be served. Please contact the Extension Office by Wednesday, December 9 th to let us know if you are coming (889-8056). • Virginia Quality Assured Sale - January 2010 Several producers have indicated that they would like to market some VQA Feeder Cattle in early January. Animals will be grouped in load lots and sold on the Virginia Cattlemen's Tel-O- Auction. A livestock marketing representative (grader) from the Virginia Department of Agri- culture will come by the farm to evaluate the calves. Donna Meade- Family and Consumer Science The Facts About Live Christmas Trees Consumers in the U.S. purchased 28.2 million farm- grown Christmas trees and 11.7 million artificial trees in 2008. It is estimated that thereare over seven million of those trees are growing in Virginia today. Here are some facts to consider when choosing a live tree over an artificial tree: Real Christmas trees benefit the environment. While they're growing, real Christmas trees support life by absorbing carbon dioxide and other gases and emitting fresh oxygen. Real Christmas trees benefit the economy. Every year appro- ximately one to two million Virginia grown trees are sold with a wholesale value of 20-40 million dollars. All of these trees were planted by Christmas tree farmers and are replanted yearly. There are about 15,000 Christ- mas tree growers in the U.S., and over 100,000 people em- ployed full or part time in the industry. Real Christmas trees are renewable. Real Christmas trees are grown on farms just like any other crop. To ensure a constant supply, Christmas tree growers plant one to three new seedlings for every tree they' harvest. Real Christmas trees are recyclable. Real Christmas trees are biodegradable, which means they can be easily reused Or recycled for mulch and other' purposes. Recycling a Christmas tree is a leading reason many experts agree they are more environmentally friendly than their plastic counterparts. Fortu- nately a whopping 93% of those trees sold in North America are recycled through more than 4,000 available recycling pro- grams. Christmas trees are recycled into mulch and used in landscaping and gardening or chipped and used for playground material, hiking trails, paths and walkways. They can be used for beachfront erosion prevention, lake and river shoreline stabili- zation and fish and wildlife habitat. Real Christmas Trees Help Preserve Green Spaces. Christ- mas trees are often grown on soil that does not support other crops. The National Christmas Tree Association website offers free on line curriculum for all age and grade ranges. Christmas tree farms offer learning opportune- ities year-round. You can find farms that offer school tours by searching their database. Hills- ville is the closest location I found in Virginia. There are some listed in North Carolina as well. http://www.virginiachristmas trees.orf http://earth9 l 1 .corn/seasonal/ green-your-holidays/ /home.cfm
