Page 6 CLINCH VALLEY TIMES St. Paul, Va. Thursday, December 4, 2014 Devils Open with Win Ben Couch pumped in "20 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and totaled 5 blocks leading Castlewood to a 65-52 win over the Central Warriors in the season opener for both teams. Cameron Salyer paced Central with a game high 28 points and 9 boards. The Devils kicked off the new season with an 8-2 run getting scores from Brad Traverse (13 points, 10 rebounds, 8 assists), Couch, and Alex Stallard on their way to a 20-12 lead at the end of the first period. Salyer tossed in 6 points and Caleb Mills, Daniel England, and Dalton Mullins each had a score, as Central rallied in the second quarter briefly tying the game at 25 all. Couch broke the tie with a three pointer and a Trey Phillips put back gave the Devils the lead for good as Castlewood closed the half with a 10-3 run. Phillips scored 6 of his nine points in the third period sparking the Devils 9-2 run beginning the sec- ond half. Salyer tallied 7 more in the third quarter but the Devils stout defense allowed only 9 points the frame and Castlewood took a 50-37 lead into the fourth period. The Warriors pulled within 9 points with just under 6 minutes to play but Castlewood point guard Jeremiah Statzer came up with a pair of steals and Traverse tipped away a sure lay up leading to 5 Devils points to secure the 65-52 win. "It feels awe- some because of how hard we played," said Castlewood head coach Casey Johnson when asked about the win. "They (Central) are a good team and their number 10 (Cameron Salyer) played a great game." "I thought we rebounded well and hart- died their pressure, said Johnson, we had a great team game."
