There are 21 participants in the program this year. The program will run through May 28, 2010. Participants also prepare to take the Official GED Tests (if needed) and the WorkKeys Assessment to eam a Career Readiness Certificate (CRC). Webpage design and professional soft skills that are essential for the 21st century workplace are also incorporated into the curriculum. All classes will be held at the Southwest Virginia Technology Develop- ment Center in Lebanon. Classes meet on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 5:00 pm to 9:30 pm. A Christmas and spring break are scheduled. Allen also introduced the PlugGED In staff, which included: Scott Allen, Assistant Program Manager, Karen Gent, GED/CRC Instructor, Jeanette Puckett, Professional Sot~ Skills Instructor, Nick Belcher, IT Instructor, Allen Heifner, IT Instructor, Brian Sikes, IT Instructor, Ron Sparks, IT Instructor. Several PlugGED In partners attended this special event. Dr. Barbara Fuller, representing Southwest Virginia Community College, and ~lick Belcher, IT instructor Fuller. Darrell Blankenship, Director of Area One Workforce In- vestment Board, addres, d the audience and the new P~ GED In class. Adam Talbert spoke on behalf of UVa-Wise and Southwest Virginia Technology Development Center. An addit- ional partner is the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development. As a conclusion to the program, Amber Durham, Brenda Helbert and Adam Ferrell, three Of the new PlugGED In participants, ad- dressed the audience. Those attending the event included local government officials, area education and business leaders, and guests of the PlugGED In participants. Fred Matthews Memorial Library J. Fred Matthews Memorial Library has something new for Juvenile and Children checkout: Bag-O-Books. Bag-O-Books is a backpack containing 10 library items: books, CDs, or books w-ith cassettes. The backpack also includes activity sheets ba~ed on the theme of the books along with information about the library. Each backpack will contain items concentrating on a com- mon theme, such as dinosaurs, colors, or farm animals. The theme will change approx- imately every two months. The bag and the items listed on the library receipt are the only items that need to be returned to the library, the activity sheets etc are yours to keep and share.
