I~age 6 cLINCH VALLEY TIMES St. Paul, Va. Thursday, December 1, 2016 't Castlewood ' Jamboree: Richlands 54, C astlewood 33 BY ANTHONY ' " STEVENS .. J'" CASTLEWOOD, Va. - T, he Blue Tornado bom- barded Castlewood from [gng range, canning 10 treys to defeat the Blue Devils 54-33 in the open- ing game of the Castlewood Jamboree on Saturday morning. The teams played three, eight- minute periods. "I thought we were aggressive, I thought we played hard, we just didn't make many shots," Castlewood coach Casey Johnson said. "Richlands might have had something to d'o with that, they are a veteran ball club and I expect them to have a very good year. "They made shots and ~ve didn't and I think that was the story of the game. I was ~ glad to get some young guys in the game to get some experience quick- ly against a good team, with a nice crowd here." -" Castlewood shot a very c dol 30 percent from the 0bor and only made three 3 pointers. Richlands was 17-of-42, making 40 per- c' nt of their shots. The Blue Devils played them lTose for most of the con- test. A free throw by Brady Gilbert pulled Castlewood within 38-31 with 4:40 left to play. But the Blues closed the game on a 16-2 0an. ' "Considering its " tturday morning at 9 o'clock and we don't have our guys that play football, I thought we did well," said Richlands coach Fred Phillips. "I thought our effort was great and our intensity was great. "I thought Castlewood beat us on the boards, but our football players are our big rebounders. I was tick- led with our first game." Caleb Horn (19 points) and Luke Phillips (16 points) provided most of the punch for Richlands. It was a balanced ledger for the Blue Devils. Trey Phillips totaled nine points. Gilbert and Tyler Milgrim supplied eight points each. "I thought we handled their press well, but we need to work on our press some," commented Johnson. "At this point in the season, we need to work on a lot of things. "For the first scrimmage against a very good team, overall I thought we han- dled ourselves pretty well."
