Thursday, November 17, 2016 Critical employability skills In today's competitive job market, most job-seek-. ers wish they knew the "secret formula to winning 'the hearts and minds of ,employers. What, one may , wonder, is the unique com- . bination of skills and val- -ues that make employers ,excited about a potential employee? Every employer is look- ing for a specific set of skills from job-seekers that match the skills needed to perform a particular job; however, beyond these job- specific skills, there are certain skills that are uni- versally sought by employ- + ers. Numerous studies have identified these critical employability skills, which are often referred to as "soft skills." Here is a list of the top ten skills most sought after by employers as indicated by Quintessential Careers. 1. Communications Skills: By far, the one skill mentioned most often by employers is the ability to 'listen, write, and speak effectively. 2. Analytical/Research .Skills: These skills deal with One's ability to assess a situation, seek multiple perspectives, gather infor- mation, and identify key issues that need to be addressed. 3. Computer/Technical Literacy: Almost all jobs now require a basic under- standing of computers, Adult Education especially word process- ing, spreadsheets, and mail. . Flexibility/Adaptability/ Managing Multiple Priorities: These skills deal with one's ability to manage multiple assign- ments, set priorities, and adapt to changing condi- tions and work assign- ments. 5. Interpersonal Abilities: This refers to the ability to relate to co2work- ers, inspire others to partic- ipate, and deal with con- flict. Leadership/Management Skills: These skills deal with one's ability to take charge and manage co- workers. 7. Multieultural Sensitivity/Awareness: Diversity is a big issue in the workplace, and job- seekers must demonstrate a sensitivity and awareness to other people and cul- tures. g Planning/Organizing: This is the ability to design, plan, organize, and imple- ment projects and tasks within an allotted time- frame. It also involves goal-setting. 9. Problem- Solving/Reasoning/Creati vity: This involves the ability to find solutions to problems using creativity, reasoning, and past experi- ences along with available information and resources. 10. Teamwork: Because so many jobs involve working in groups, one must possess the abili- ty to work well with others in a professional manner while attempting to achieve a common goal. The good news is that most job seekers possess many of these skills to some degree. The better news is that job-seekers with weaknesses in any of these areas can improve their skills through train- ing, professional develop- ment, or mentoring from someone who understands these skills. R cipes by He bert CRANBERRY APPLE PIE 2 cups sugar 1/4 cup cornstarch 1/4 cup orange juice 1/2 teas. cinnamon 1/2 teas. apple pie spice 1/8 teas. nutmeg 1/4 teas. lemon juice 4 cups sliced peeled tart apples 2 cups fresh cranberries pastry for double crust pie (9 inches) Combine sugar, corn- starch, orange juice, cinna- mon, apple pie spice, nut- meg and lemon juice. Add apples and cranberries; toss gently. Line a 9 inch pie plate with pastry. Add fill- ing; dot butter over top. Put top pastry on. Seal and flute edges. Bake 425 degrees for 10 minutes. Reduce heat to 350 degrees. Bake 50 minutes longer. CHOCOLATE CHIP MERINGUE BARS 1 cup shortening 1 1/2 cups packed brown sugar, divided 1/2 cup sugar 3 eggs, separated 1 tbsp. cold water 1 tbsp. vanilla 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teas. baking soda 1/8 teas. salt 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips 1 cup ground salted peanuts Cream shortening, 1/2 cup of brown sugar and sugar together. Add egg yolks; mix well. Combine water and vanilla. Combine flour, soda and salt; add to cream mixture altern'ately with water mix- ture. Mix well. Spread into a greased baking pan. Sprinkle with chocolate chips. In a small mixing bow}, beat egg whites until soft peaks form. Add remaining brown sugar, 2 tbsp. at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat until stiff peaks form. Spread over chocolate chips. Top with peanuts. Bake 350 degrees 30-35 minutes. CHICKEN-APPLE CROISSANTS 2 cups diced cooked chicken 1 cup diced peeled apple 3/4 cup mayonnaise or salad dressing 1/2 cup halved green grapes 1/4 cup sliced almonds, toasted 1/2 teas. seasoned salt 1/4 teas. pepper 6 croissants Combine all ingredi- ents. Spoon into the crois- sants. ZIPPY CHERRY' SAUCE 1 can (21 oz.) cherry pie filling 1/4 cup lemon juice 1 tbsp. brown sugar 1/2 teas. ginger 1/4 teas. seasoned salt 1/4 teas. vinegar In a saucepan, combine pie filling, lemon juice, sugar, ginger, salt and vine- gar; bring to a boil stirring constantly. Serve warm with pork roast or pork chops or tenderloin. DILLY DEVILED EGGS 1 small cucumber, shredded 1 teas. salt 6 hard-cooked eggs 1/4 cup sour cream 1/4 teas. dill weed Combine cucumber and salt. Let stand 15 minutes. Drain and squeeze out excess liquid; set aside. Slice eggs in half length- wise. Remove yolks and set whites aside. In a bowl, mash yolks. Stir +in sour cream and dill weed. Thursday morning, a propane tank exploded, leveling a house in Washington County.
