Scott Jessee - Agriculture Prussic Acid and Frost There are a number of forage plants that may form prussic acid, also called hydrocyanic acid, following frost. Prussic acid is most likely to reach Got a sunny day -Fall All over the country, fall is in full swing and recreational boaters and anglers are trying to squeeze in their last good day on the water. But when they do, boaters need to follow a safety playbook appropriate for this time of year. That's because boaters often let their guard down when safety becomes an ever greater challenge. What makes fall boating safety so different? The BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water explains: • The sun is in your face and the breeze may be warm, but below the keel the water temperature has dropped. A simple fall overboard at this time of year can be a big problem if you can't get back into the boat. What is your plan to get back aboard, especially if you're boating following a frost. Young tender growth following a dronght can also be toxic. Species that form prtmsic acid. incl0de johnsongrass, sorghum, sudangrass, sorghum-sudangrass hybrids and wild cherry trees. Prussic acid is different from nitrate toxicity• Prussic acid will deteriorate as the plant leaves and stems dry whereas nitrate is stable in hay for some time. If forage with high levels of prussic acid is ensiled, it will be safe to feed after 3 weeks of fermentation• Standing plants killed by frost are usually safe to feed after a week. However, in . some instances only plants in certain portions of a field are killed by frost and others are not affected. Be sure that all plants in the field are killed by the frost before allowing animals to graze. With many hayfields in the county containing johnsongrass, special care is needed to protect "valuable" grazing animals. For more information about prussic acid poisoning, please contact the Extension Office• Donna Meade - Family and T,,nost meaningful gift iis the one made with love and yohr own hands. Boating Safety Tips from BoatUS Foundation= . can also buy you critical time to get back in the boat• • You need to let some- one know where you're going and what time you'll be back. That's because there are significantly fewer boat- ers on the water at this time of year to bail you out if there's trouble• A float plan left with family or friends is simple to do, and don't forget to check back in upon your return. Here's an easy, sample float plan: plan.asp. • With temperature fluc- tuations, fog takes only a short time to appear.
