CLINCH VALLEY TIMES St. Paul, Va. Thursday, September 22, 2016 Page7 II -- -- -- -- -- From Page 1 without ever having to ask. And even better, he knows what to do to try and help her feel better." Mr. Verderosa went on to explain that when anyone enters his office, Sherman uses the person's voice inflection to tell if he or she is upset. Sherman will sidle up to a distressed student as a way of letting them know that they can pet him. If the child doesn't want Sherman near them, he can tell that, too. It's all about Sherman's unique ability to detect voice inflection. Mr. Verderosa has had Sherman for six and a half years, since Sherman was only six weeks old. He began ti'aining Sherman to be a therapy dog nearly immediately, and says training early is best: the younger the dog, the better. After taking Sherman home for the first time, Mr. Verderosa immediately noticed that Sherman has a perfect disposition to be a therapy dog. Commonly called a "Labradinger," Sherman is half Brittany Spaniel and half Labrador Retriever, a combination that has given him a nearly perfect balance of playfulness and docility. Sherman instinctively knows when to stay calm and when to play. His job at Castlewood is Sherman's first time working with high school students. In the past, he's worked with Mr. Verderosa also notes that one of Sherman's great-~' est specialties is working with disabled children. "Even: though Sherman cannot speak, he's helped to enable non-: verbal and autistic elementary school students to find their~ voices," says Mr. Verderosa. This is a talent Of Sherman's~ that he hopes to continue to put to use--Sherman ofte~ seems to be exactly what a child needs during times wh~: elementary, intermediate, and middle schoolers, but as a teacher or other staff member is simply no help. Tile: Mr. Verderosa says, he's still getting used to his surround- great thing about Sherman is that he can sense problems he doesn't have to wonder or ask. ings at Castlewood. Even though Sherman has only been at Castlewood for a short time, he's already begun work- ing closely with Project Lifeline, a credit recovery pro- gram created to help students gain enough credits to grad- uate. As of now, Sherman often sits in the Project Lifeline classroom, and with time, Mr. Verderosa believes he will walk around the room from student to student.
