CLINCH VALLEY TIMES St. Paul, Va. Thursday, September 8, 2016 Page Hale claims Late Model Championship as season crosses finish line Wayne Hale wrapped up the 2016 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series season at Lonesome Pine Raceway by taking the Late Model Stock Car crown. Hale also won last season's coveted crown, too. Hale and Lance Gatlin were on poin for the night's first Late Model Stock Car race. On the opening lap, Hale took the lead over Gatlin. Keith Stiltner, racing from third, battled into second on the second circuit. The race's only caution waved on lap three for a spin from Donnie Davis in Turn 4. Hale would race back into the lead on the restart. Kres VanDyke would take second place from Stiltner on lap nine. Hale would lead every lap of the 35-lap feature for his ninth win of the season. "We started out with a good car," said Hale. "Sat on the pole, led every lap and took the win." Hale noted the stiff competition from VanDyke in the first feature. "We had a good competition with Kres (VanDyke). He definitely wasn't going down without a fight." VanDyke won the second Late Model Stock Car feature. The 2016 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Tennessee state champion took the lead on the race's final restart for the win. Jeff Woodward and Gatlin made up the front row to start the final Late Model Stock Car race of the season. Gatlin took the lead on the opening lap of the race. Gatlin would come under pressure from VanDyke on lap four and the two raced door to door until VanDyke was able to take the lead on lap 9. Hale would move into second place on the very same lap. By lap 13, Hale had closed in on VanDyke and was looking to take over first place real-estate. Hale would race around VanDyke and into the lead on lap 15. Trouble between Greg Bohannon Jr. and Derek Lane would bring out the first caution of the race. The two would make contact and send Bohannon Jr. spinning in Turn 3. Hale would return to the lead on the restart, with VanDyke battling back on the out- side. The race would see another yellow flag on 28. Hale would again race back ahead of VanDyke to regain the lead. Lap 31 saw the fmal caution period of the race, setting the field for a four-lap dash to the finish. Hale would look to retake the lead on the restart but VanDyke was battling back hard on the outside. The two would swap the lead back and forth coming to the white flag. With the final lap underway, the battle was still on between the two competitors, i Exiting Turn 4 for the final time, VanDyke was able to cross the line by just 0.078 of a second over Hale. With nine wins and no fmish outside the top three this season, Hale repeated as the !! Late Model Stock Car track champion. A title he was happy to repeat. '; Rob Austin and Emma Stiltner made up the front row for the 30-lap Modified Street- race. Stilmer took the lead on the opening lap. On lap 2, the caution would wave whenl Nick Cole spun off of the bumper of Rob Austin. Elby Harrison would also spin trying i to avoid the incident. - Back under green, Stiltner would return to the lead. Sam Hurd began to make his way i up to the front, moving into second on lap 10. On lap 14, Hurd would take over the lead i from Stiltner. The caution would wave again on lap 26 for debris at the exit of Turn 4. i Hurd would once again take the lead on the restart and lead the remaining four laps tO ', take his first win of the season. Harrison was crowned the division's champion with i wins on the season. ,' Jackie Jackson pulled off the win in the season's final Pure 4 race. Jackson was out. front the entire 25 laps for the win. John Ketron finished the night in second and was abram; i to claim the title from Jason Ketron, his youngest son. Only two points separated the father-son duo heading into the fmai race. Joshua Gobble led flag to flag in 25 laps of Mod 4 action. The victory was Gobble's~ In'st on the season. Rocky Yates pulled off the championship in the division for the see, ond year in a row. Jamie Meadows won the Pure Street finale over Doug Austin and Michael Deskins. Meadows and Austin were separate by one point in the championship standings at the drop of the green flag. With Meadows winning and Austin fmishing directly behind him, the two were tied for the championship at the race's end. Austin would prevail with the title, having the tiebreaker of most wins on the season. As he has done seven times this season, Blaine Harrison won the Bandeleros race. Harrison added win No. 8 Saturday night and cemented his first championship. The Legend Cars were in action for a special feature Saturday night. Ashton Higgins won the 10-lap event. VCHEC is a 600-megawatt power station that utilizes a technology called "circulating fluidized bed" so it can bum waste coal. It can also bum biomass as part of its fuel and currently uses the renewable source for about 10 percent of its fuel. Fitted with the latest environmental; control technology, VCHEC began operation in 2012 an'd- quickly took on waste coal as part of its fuel stream. The, facility operates under some of the most stringent air quat-- ity requirements in the nation for a coal-fired power sta, tion. Dominion partners with Gobco LLC of Abingdon, Va,.,, a company that has won multiple awards for its work environmental reclamation, to identify and reclaim old waste coal sites in Southwest Virginia. Gobco screens out the waste coal and provides it to VCHEC for use in tl e" power station. The site is cleaned down to the original' ground, covered with top soil where necessary, sloped as' needed for proper drainage and replanted with a special grass that supports wildlife. The surface area is then: replanted with thousands of native hardwood tree seedlings. "To see these old waste coal sites restored is reallys : joy for us," said Wait Crickmer, co-owner and manager 9f Gobco. "I have worked 40 years in the coal industry and the last 13 years overseeing these reclamation efforts l However, it was not until VCHEC came online that our company really had the opportunity to clean up some the worse problems. The irony is that a new type of coal-' fired power station is crucial to cleaning up the waste of a bygone era in coal mining." Over the coming months, Dominion willbe workingr with Gobco and DMME to evaluate other major gob piles in the Clinch River watershed and plan for their reclama tion. We are pledged to well.
