CALVARY BAPTIST will distribute food to the needy at the Speedway In the 60's, I got a job in Kingspon helping build a bridge over the Holston River. It was a four lane, so we had to build the bridge north bound and south bound. When the job was start- ed, the road was not completed enough to get the materials in there; so everything had to be brought in under the bridge on the old road and the materials had to be carried up a bank to where it could then be loaded on a truck. One day they brought in a load of steel. It measured two the other guys proceeded to tell me how crazy and stupid ! had been to admit to having had back problems. They said that the em- ployer certainly would not want a worker with any kind of health problems - especially back pro- blems - considering all the hard work that lay ahead. They all were sure 1 would be getting a lay-off slip and they almost had me believing it too! But still [ was glad l had been truthful. The next day the foreman came by and told me to pick out four men and that we inches in diameter and sixty feet were to start the decking on the south bound lane of the bridge. The others had to carry that load of steel up the hill to the truck. The reason the foreman had asked about anyone having back problems /as so they would not be asked to carry steel. So being truthful paid off for me because decking the bridge was much easier work than carrying that steel! Like the saying goes - "Honesty is.the best policy." ; long. It was to be put into the concrete. So when all the deck- ing of the bridge wa ./completed in the north bound lahe, the fore- man came out one day during our dinner hour and asked if any of us workers had ever had any back problems to the extent that we had had to see a doctor. No one spoke up except me. I said that I had indeed had some back pain and had visited a chiro- practor. ARer the foreman left, P .,.Thh gourd won .i ribbon,.
