Thursday, August 14, 2014 Sports Features 2014 Eastside Spartan team Speed, leadership high, light 2014 Spartans The loss of 14 seniors, including 3 year starting QB Caleb Riner, hurts admits Eastside's Matthew Hamilton, but the Spartan's boss is excited about his young squad. "We have a great group of young guys" says Hamilton, we've got good team Speed and we're getting great leadership. Justin Banks (315 rush- ing, 658 receiving yards from last season) steps into the vacancy left by Riner's graduation. "Justin got some great experience last year at the quarterback position and give s us a lot of confidence on offense", "He has good knowledge and understanding of the offense and will fit right in where Caleb left off", says Hamilton. But Banks' gift is his speed, he will be able to escape defenders and make plays outside the pocket. Banks is a fantastic student remarked Hamilton and is also a good leader on the field. Along with Banks the Spartans are led by senior lineman Daniel Edwards(G,T) and senior linebacker Bailey Baker. We've been very pleased with the way practice has gone so far, but with a group as young as this you have to have good team leaders and we have three of the best, Hamilton explained during Friday' s interview. Seven Sophomores are expected to play a big role in this years campaign and the leadership of our upper- classmen is the key to how well they will adapt. When asked what he felt the strengths of this years Spartans will be coach Hamilton's first word was "tackling", soph- omores Alex Hampton(T) and Buley Ball(DE) join Edwards and Terry Robey , = UP front. Hampton and Ball are young but aggressive and will add to our defense. Bailey Baker, Tyler Tibbs, Maurice Thompson, and J.D. Slone highlight a defensive backfield with added strength and speed. "Speed at quarterback and the other "skill" posi- tions will also be a strength we feel this season" said Hamilton. Along with Banks, the Spartans will look to Slone (298 rushing, 312 receiving yards), Tibbs(WR), and sopho- more Tyler Elam (WB/ receiver) for offensive pro- duction. Edwards leads an other- wise new offensive line into the 2014 season. "Besides Daniel, we have a new starter at every posi- tion on the offensive line. Again, the key is how fast our guys will be able to slow the game down and adapt. Eastside has no plans to slow down their high speed attacking offense. "We are young yes" remarks coach Hamilton, "but we are very confident in our guys and our system. The Spartans open the 2014 football season in a scrimmage august 15th at Carl McConnell Stadium against Holston.
