Asa Kirby - Summer Intern - Agriculture Cedar Apple Rust Cedar Apple Rust is a disease that is prominent in the Appalachian area that affects the leaves and fruit of apple trees. The disease appears as orange or greenish yellow spots on the apple itself, and yellowish orange spots on the leaves of -infected apple trees. Cedar Ap- ple Rust is caused by a fungus that appears as a gelatinous mass in the branches of the infected cedar tree. The infection is spread when the fungus releases its spores and they come into contact, with the apple tree. Therefore the closer the apple tree is to the infected cedar tree the more severe the disease will appear and the harder it will be to eliminate the issue. However, apple rust can be controlled if apple trees are sprayed with a protectant fungi- cide during the early pink blos- som stage through the 10 a of June. In cases where the tree is heavily infected more than one application of the protectant spray may be required. Research has proven that the most effective spray for the control and prevention of cedar apple rust is Spectracide Immunox (lmmunox) which can be found at the local Coop or in the lawn and garden section of your local Lowe's or Wal-Mart. If you cannot find Spectracide, the next best choice would be an apple tree fungicide that contains sulfur. For the best results in controlling the disease and to prevent any further harm to the tree, apply the spray as indicated on the label. American Heart Association,'11'
