CLINCH VALLEY TIMES St. Paul, Va. Thursday, June 15, 2017 Page 5 /'~ / \ S On Sunday, June 4, eighty three seniors from Castlewood High School received their diplomas in the school gymnasium. The class valedictorian was Jacob M. Baker and the salutatorian was Savannah J. Roberson. Savannah delivered a brief com- mencement speech to her classmates followed by the valedictorian address given by Jacob. Diplomas were presented by Russell County School Division Superintendent, Dr. Gregory Brown, assisted by School Board members Mr. Donald J. Ramey, Mr. Jeff Cook, Mr. Alexander Zachwieja, Ms. Cynthia Compton, Mr. Wayne Bostic, Mr. Charlie Collins and Ms. Linda Garrett. Ms. Lila Jenkins, Principal of the high school, presented each graduate with a com- memorative rose. Mr. Jarrod Sparks, Assistant Principal, called each member of the graduating class to the stage. Following the awarding of diplomas a special video presentation highlighting each senior's destination was shown to the graduates and all their relatives and friends in attendance. The 2017 Castlewood High School class valedic- torian is Mr. Jacob M. Baker. Jacob is the son of Ms. Trena Baker. Jacob achieved a perfect 4.0 grade point average. He distinguished himself in his class as a member of the BETA Club, State Champion Forensic Team and the Blue Devil Drama Club. Jacob was active in athletics through cross country, basketball and track and field and a multi- ple letter winner. Jacob plans to pursue a degree in engineering. He will begin that quest this fall at Southwest Community College. The 2017 Castlewood High School class salutato- rian is Ms. Savannah J. Roberson. Savannah is the daughter of Michael and Pamela Roberson and the granddaughter of Robert and Phyllis Wallace and Arnold and Alice Roberson. Savannah has one sibling, Skylar. Savannah achieved a per- fect 4.0 grade point aver- age. Savannah distin- guished herself in the class through membership in the BETA Club, in the State Champion Forensics Team, Blue Devil Drama Club and a national competitor in Castlewood's Future Business Leaders of America Club. Savannah was every active in athlet- ics at the school. She ran cross country, played on the Tennis team and excelled on the school's Track and Field Team. Savannah's post secondary plans include enrollment at Radford University with a major in English/Creative Writing and a minor in Music. Finishing in the top ten of the 2017 Castlewood High School graduating class is Ms. Camryn G. Cook. Camryn is the daughter of Jeff and Melissa Cook. Camryn's grandparents are Ronnie and Connie Milton and Tom and Wanda Cook. Camryn has one sibling, Coleman. Camryn achieved a perfect 4.0 grade point average in her studies. Camryn was active in numerous clubs, organi- zations and teams at Castlewood High School including Future Business Leaders of America, State Champion Forensics Team, Blue Devil Drama Club, Academic Team, Varsity Cheerleading, BETA Club and Student Council. Camryn played on the school tennis team and par- ticipated in track and field. Ms. Cook will attend Virginia Tech in the fall where she will pursue a degree in engineering. Finishing in the top ten of the 2017 graduating class of Castlewood High School is Ms. Madison L. Ray. Madison is the daugh- ter of Randal and Jamie Ray and the sister of Sophie Ray. Grandparents include Bennie and Glenda Lane and Ralph and Bonnie Ray. Madison is the great-granddaughter of J.C. Lane. Madison achieved a 4.0 grade point average. She distinguished herself by being selected to receive the Castlewood High Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award. Madison has been active in numerous clubs and organizations at the school including BETA Club, Blue Devil Drama, Academic Team, State Champion Forensic Team, Future Business Leaders of America and MGA. Athletically, Madison was a varsity cheerleader and member of the school's tennis team. Madison plans to attend UVa-Wise in the fall. She will pursue a degree in biology with plans to enter the field of medicine. Finishing in the top ten of the 2017 graduating class of Castlewood High School is Ms. Shelby J. Grizzle. Shelby is the daughter of Mark and Amy Grizzle and the sister of Ayden Grizzle. Grandparents include Jack and Phyllis Grizzle, the late Jimmy and Gail Shoemaker and the late Brenda Grizzle. Shelby achieved a 4.0 grade point average throughout high school. SCOTT JESSEE - AGRICULTURE 2017 Virginia Cattlemen's Annual Field Day The Virginia Cattlemen's Annual Field Day will be held on Friday, July 7th at Stuart Land and Cattle Company at Rosedale, VA. There are many activities scheduled throughout the dayI Registration begins at 10 am with the Trade Show opening at 10:30 am. Guided bus tours will be conducted throughout the day showcasing the historic "Clifton Farm." These tours will feature company history as well as highlights of today's management. Complementary lunch will begin at 11:30 am along with introductions of "Distinguished Guests!" The Virginia Cattlemen's Association will present their Industry Service and Cattlemen of the Year Awards. In addition to these awards, Russell County's Andy Smith will be installed as the new President of the VCA. Don't miss this day of fun and fellowship with beef producers from throughout Virginia. Finishing in the top ten of the 2017 graduating class of Castlewood High School is Darla Mullins. Darla is the daughter of Craig and Lori Phillips, granddaughter of Tommy and Donna Mullins and Normal Phillips. Darla has five siblings: Matthew, Ryan, and Tara Phillips and Craig Jr. and Emma Mullins. Darla achieved a 3.96 grade point average. Darla was active in Future Business Leaders of America, the TACO Club, and she was a member of the school's varsity tennis team. Ms. Mullins will attend Southwest Community College in the fall with plans to pursue a degree in dental hygiene at neighboring Wytheville Community College. Finishing in the top ten of the2017 graduating class of Castlewood High School is Sydney Strange. Sydney is the daughter of John and Becky Strange. Sydney completed her high school studies with a 3.93 grade point average. She has been an active participant in BETA Club, Blue Devil Drama, and Future Business Leaders of America. Sydney distin- guished herself athletically by gaining distinction in volleyball, basketball, soft- ball, and track and field. Ms. Strange plans on attending Hollins University in the fall where she will pursue a degree in mathematics or geology. Finishing the top ten in the 2017 graduating class of Castlewood High School is Cody Meade. Cody is the son of Tony and Amy Meade and the grandson of Larry and Nancy Meade, Carlos Hale and Regina Johnson. Cody completed his high school studies with a 3.86 grade point average. Cody's principal activities included membership in the Future Business Leaders of America and the Academic Team. Cody intends to enroll at Southwest Community College this fall and begin pursuit of a degree in engi- neering. Finishing in the top ten in the 2017 graduating class of Castlewood High School is Alyson Long. Alyson is the daughter of Amanda Boggs and Calvin Long. She is the step- daughter of Eddie Boggs. Grandparents include the late Elmer and Joyce Johnson and C.A. and Agnes Long. Alyson com- pleted her program of stud- ies with a 3.70 grade point average. Alyson was active as a varsity cheerleader. Ms. Long plans on attend- ing Virginia Highlands Community College where she will enter a degree pro- gram in health sciences. Finishing in the top ten in the 2017 graduating class of Castlewood High School is Noah Steele. Noah is the son of Bart and Angela Steele. Noah has one sibling, Cameron Taylor. Grandparents include John and Brenda Steele, Gene Stanley, Fayette and Donald Warren. Noah finished his academic program with a 3.80 grade point average.
