CLINCH VALLEY TIMES St. Paul, Va. Thursday, June 12, 2014 Page 7 Main S General Main Street has been given a unique fundraising opportunity. A map of St. Paul's Outdoor Recreation Area has been designed by Southwest Virginia artist and native Mige Davey of Davey Designs, and edited by Lou Wallace and Frank Kilgore. Funds from the purchase of ads on the back of the map will be used to strengthen Main Street's efforts in promoting and enhancing the Town's historic downtown. The map has gone to print (thanksto a much appreciated contribution from the Town), and will be available in three Interstate 81 Welcome Centers coming from Tennessee, West Virginia, and North Carolina. A supply of maps will also be pro- vided to the 14 advertisers. This was an especially quick turnaround to get ads sold and copy ready for print, but it is a wonderful gift to Main Street. Main Street received a $1,000 contribution from Dominion. It will also be used to promote Main Street programs in downtown St. Paul. - The St. Paul Main Street Facebook page continues to grow in popularity. The recent postings for Clinch River Days have generated an increase of 35 new "likes" bring- ing us to a total of 598. A post announcing Clinch River Days and boosted with $5 was seen by over 1,900 people and shared by 20 people. At the recent Opportunity Summit, I attended an excellent workshop on promoting your business. The use of Facebook and website with a video were highly encouraged because they are free. A tip to share: A website with a video goes straight to the top on Google searches because Google owns You Tube. With new budget funds, we hope to develop a stand-alone web- site for Main Street. entn by Teresa Harless Meetings/Events - I attended the May 5 meeting of the Willis Building Renovation Committee. A representative from the engi- neering/architectural firm Thompson & Litton was pre- sent, and iscussion centered on exact plans for the build- ing. Drawings should be ready in 30 days. - I represented the Town of St. Paul and Main Street at the all-da~ Opportunity Summit held May 8 at the Virginia Technology Development Center in Lebanon. The event was well attended, with over 100 entrepreneurs and vendors present. It was a good networking event. - Representatives from the southwest region Virginia Main Street towns (Abingdon, Bristol, Marion, and St. Paul) met in Abingdon on May 16 to hear a presentation from Anthony Flaccavento on BALLE (Business Alliance for Local Living Economies) and its potential contribu- tion to local and downtown economic development in SWVA. There is sufficient interest in some of the ideas, resources, and potential connections to BALLE among the four Main Street leaders to move forward with an additional meeting in mid -June to consider this in more detail. DHCD's BEE (Building Entrepreneurial Economies) program could be a potential source of sup- port for this initiative. A planning grant in the range of $7,500 might be an effective way to further develop the ideas discussed. The grant will open on July 1 and be due at the end of August. -" The Lyric Ad Hoc Committee held two meetings in May. The monthly meeting was held on May 15. At that time; committee members had an opportunity to provide input based oa the architect drawings of the indoor floor plan from Ctrter Green of Frazier and Associates. On May 22, Consultant Sara Levinson was in town for a final '. presentation of the feasibility study. During a dinner at St. Paul Elementary School, attended by Committee Members and the Town Council, Sara went through the study and attachments in detail and took questions from the audience. Sara also met with Joy Rumley of DHCD while in the area to go over the project. As a follow up and next steps, Kathy Stewart, Lou Wallace and I will meet with Joy next Thursday. I hope everyone has seen the front of the Lyric. It was posted on the Main Street's Facebook page and has been seen by almost 1,400 people. Thanks to Main Street Design Chair Juanita Kelly, Harry' Kelly, and Lou and Bill Wallace. - The 2014 Clinch River Days festival was May 29-31. We had exceptional weather and great attendance. The Thursday evening art show/reception was well attended with visitors from the region. Main Street provided vol- unteers to work the Railroad Museum Art Show, the Photography Contest, and the Main Street fundraising booth. We had 12 volunteers who worked approximately? 25 hours during the festival. The last minute creation of a. Clinch River Days Facebook page (thanks Joyce Kilgore and Lou Wallace) generated a major buzz. Upcoming Events: - The Willis Building Restoration Committee will meet/ June 12 at 6 p.m. at Town Hall. - The Lyric Ad Hoc Committee will meet June 19 aL, 5:30 p.m. at the Hillman House. - Hold the date - Saturday evening, July 26, in the Market Pavilion - the third annual Cooks & Books event to benefit J. Fred Matthews Memorial Library and St. Paul Tomorrow. Buy, sell, notify, employ, through... rk/ We are pledged to the letter and spirit of Virginia's and HUD's equal opportunity hous- ing policies.
