Scott Jessee - Agriculture Safety Considerations for Storing Hay in the Barn Many producers throughout the area has participated in the Commodity Storage Initiative and constructed new hay barns. Storage losses for hay put in the barn are definitely decreased, but we have to be careful to prevent combustion/burning due to extreme heating. Each year there are many reports of hay barns burning. The principal way to avoid fires from internal heating is to bale at the proper moisture level. Round bales of hay should be no more than 18% moisture when stored in the barn. Square bales should contain no more than 20% moisture. When baling square hay and picking it up (by hand) in the field, there was certainly more emphasis on moisture level. With round balers that can han- dle hay at higher moisture lev- els, producers are more tempted to roll hay "a little tougher" especially when rain is threatening. Hay that is suspect of being too wet should be stOred outside for about three weeks. This time period should allow the dangers of burning to pass. It is also a good idea not to store new crop hay against old or left over crop. For hay that is in question, an internal temperature can be taken. Take a capped section of inch pipe and drive it into the hay. Lower a thermometer into the pipe. Temperatures below 120F are normal. Temperatures between 120 and 140F require caution. Hay heating to 160F or higher is in danger of catching fire. Internal temperatures can build in hay for the first couple of weeks after baling. Periodic monitoring of hay with ques- tionable moisture levels is advisable until it is clear that there is no danger of fire. Bill Worrell- Forestry What is wrong with my Sycamore tree? It's been a wet, cool year thus far. And almost always, when it's like this for a long time in the spring and early summer, diseases do a number on some of our trees. Folks start wondering what's wrong with their favorite shade-giver. A lot of trees begin to get a dead look. It's sort of like frost kill, but occurs a month or twoafter the last frost. Often this is a disease called anthracnose. Anthracnose is caused by a fungus. It's most noticeable on sycamore. It infects young lea- ves in the spring. On sycamore, the leaves die fairly quickly. As more leaves come out, they too are infected and die. As the 'leaves die, trees appear bare and dead, especially when infection is heavy. Later, in mid-summer, temperatures get hotter, rainfall decreases and disease levels drop off. The trees then put out new leaves which will Survive until frost. Things then appear more normal and the trees can grow a bit. Unfortunately, there isn't much that can be done to control anthracnose in larger shade trees or forest-grown trees. Manzate or Dithane are registered for spray control, but spraying has to be started when buds first begin to swell in the spring. A total of three sprays are recom-: mended. For 50 foot-tall trees, this becomes a difficult an!.:, expensive proposition. There } also a compound called Ar, boi: tect 20-S that can be in.iec: directly into a high-value tree. Protection will last for 3 years, but must be done by a trained applicator. Special equipment is also needed Usually, the best course of action for anthracnose infection is to do nothing. Healthy trees can withstand I or 2 years of heavy infection. Tree growth and vigor do suffer, but the tree isn't usually killed. When we return to a dry spring, infection levels will drop somewhat. It's a good idea to rake and burn dead leaves that have fallen from infected trees. But nothing else is really practical. Anthracnose causes pro- blems with ashes, dogwoods, and white oaks as weN. tn fact, dogwood anthracnose is the main cause of decline of woods- grown dogwood. Here again, coolness and dampness contri- butes to the seriousness of the disease. Dogwoods growing in thick, heavy woods have just about all died from the disease. In our yards, they can resist the disease if they are in the sun. If growing in the shade, prospects for the dogwoods are not good. There are a whole host of other insects and diseases that we have been seeing this year. These include spruce spider mites on blue spruces, bag- worms on just about anything green, and all sorts of rot and de- cay problems. The decay usually comes from tree topping and other incorrect pruning. If you need advice on a tree, contact your local Extension Agent or a Certified Arborist.
