I I Deadline for I classifieds I _ l is Tuesday noon! I I know. many of my stories refer to my dad being a share- cropper. When I was about 9 years old my dad needed to find a place where he could run two cows and could have hogs and chickens and a place with more tobacco allotment than what we had where we lived. He also needed a place where he could raise all the corn he wanted to raise. That year he rented from Mr. Arvil Porter. He was the mana- gerofthe Sally Meade Farm. We moved to that farm and the sha- recropper's house was on top of a mountain. At that time every- thing was done with horse drawn equipment. My dad lived there until he died 20 some years later. The people who lived there before had dug a hole in the mountain and made a room. The room was level with the ground. They dug it because they were afraid of storms on the moun- tain. They used it for shelter but we used it as a dairy. It was a good place to keep your canned goods because they had built shelves in it. It was also a good place to keep milk, butter and stuff like that. At that time electricity had not got that far off the road so we didn't have a refrigerator. One day dad had gone and it came a storm. My morn said we had tO?go to the dairy because it was going to blow the house away. Mom and dad were both afraid.'of storms so they were always waking me up to go to the dairy because of a storm. Slie sent me down one day to get a can of tomatoes or something, It was always dark in there so you had to take a light. When I got there and turned on my flashlight I saw she had a 10 gallon crock of pickled beans sitting in the floor. It had some kind of metal lid on it and on top of thaf there was one of the biggest lblack snakes that I had ever Seen. I ran back to the house screaming bloody murder. Morn-went down with the hoe and kfllea the snake. I told mom and dadTthat if a storm came through;and blew the house to Castle, gun that I would never go in thatsnake den again A.far as I can remember I never went back in that dairy again because there is nobody as scared of snakes as I am.
