Mountain Empire PACE celebrates fi!+! anniversary of Mountain Empire PACE recently celebrated its filth anniversary with special events for PACE participants and staff. April 1 marked five years of operation of PACE (Program of All-inclusive Care for the Eld- erly), a health and social service program of Mountain Empire Older Citizens which enables older people with chronic illnesses who need help with activities of daily living to live in their own homes as long as possible. As part of the celebration, which was held on two different days so that all PACE partici- pants might have an opportunity to enjoy it, nationally known local artist Ron Short came with banjo and other instruments to the PACE Center in Big Stone Gap to entertain participants and staff with music and storytelling. According to PACE Director Tony Lawson, Short's perform- ance was "a regular tour de force! He led us from the sunny side through an unbroken circle to the cloud of glory. He had everyone singing and laughing." "PACE was an extraordinary vision of MEOC Executive Dir- ector (now Emeritus) Marilyn Maxwell and of the MEOC Board," said current MEOC Executive Director Michael Wampler who succeeded Max- well in November 2012. "Mountain Empire PACE was one of the very first rural PACE service to area : programs in the nation. Under Tony's leadership, it has been one of the most successful." PACE Director Tony Lawson added, "Five years ago PACE was something new in southwest Virginia. Now it is an estab- lished program, one that we hope will serv families in the region for man, many years to come." When Mountain Empire PACE opened its doors on April 1, 2008, it was with two program participants. These two as well as other participants who enrolled during the first year were recognized along with staff who had been with PACE since the beginning. Current enroll- ment in PACE stands at 100. "It's amazing to see the growth and support of the program through the past five years," said MEOC Executive Director Michael Wampler. "But even more amazing is the change in health and functional status of PACE participants be- cause of the unequaled individ- ualized care they receive at PACE." People who enroll in PACE are eligible for a broad range of services, including primary and specialty medical care, prescript- tion medications, hospitalization and home health care, rehab services, personal care, trans- portation, social services, recre- ation and programmed activities, meals and nutrition, emergency L'*. seces, medical re';pi!, e nurs!.ng home care.
