Thursday, May 8, 2014 Sports Features Harold Lester Memorial Golf Tournament set for June 6 at LPCC Rye Cove 6 Devils 4 Uriah Addison went 2-4 and scored 2 times in the Eagles 6-4 win Thursday over Castlewood. Dakota Grizzel got the start for the Devils, tossing 4 innings, giving up 2 runs, three hits, while striking out 6. After the Devils went down in order in the top of the first, Addison reached on a walk and came in to score on Brady Hensley&apos;s base hit to left. Rye Cove scored again in the home half of the third, Andrew Hill was safe on an infield error coming in to score on a two out single by Brady Palmer. Darryl Hileman opened the Castlewood 5th with a base hit, Kyle Kennedy Walked, and Dillon Hartley reached safely on a field- er's choice forcing Hileman out at third. Collin Moore walked loading the bases. Grizzel would be credited with the first of 4 Blue Devil's rbi in the "inning when he was hit by a pitch. Cody Amburgey added another run also get- ting hit by a pitch. A drive off the bat of Adam Puckett would sc ore two more Castlewood runs staking the Devils to a 4-2 lead. The Eagles came right back in the bottom of the inning to grab the lead for good. With one out Addison singled, Hensley reached on an error and Eric Hill's sacrifice fly scored Addison. Palmer reached on a walk, then back to back hits by Jalen Hammonds and Andrew Giles gave Rye Cove runs 5 and 6 to put the game away. Ethan Hood earned the win in relief for the Eagles while Kennedy takes the loss for the Devils. Slone pitched 5 innings of no-hit baseball and bashed the game winning sacrifice fly into left field driving in Nick Sturgill with the game's first run in the bot- tom of the fourth inning, in the Spartans 3-0 confer- ence win over Rye Cove. Matt Green got the start for the Spartans striking out the side in the first inning. Spartan freshman Austin Smallwood was nearly as good in the top of the second fanning two, giving up a hit ,then getting another on a ground out. From the other dugout, Rye Cove senior pitcher Uriah Addison was just as effective. Addison held the Eastsiders hitless through the first three innings using a couple of "off speed" pitches while showing the very occasional fastball. Slone came on to pitch in the third and again retirel the Eagles in the fourth. Nick Sturgill led off the Spartan 4th with a base hit up the middle. "Sturgill moved to third with a per- fectly placed sacrifice bunt by Wes Yeary and a wild pitch by Addison. Slone smacked the next strike thrown into left field driv- ing Sturgill in with the Spartans first run. In the Eastside 5th Sturgill cranked a two run base hit into the gap plating a pair of insurance runs for the Spartans. Slone set the Eagles down in order over the next two innings to complete the win for Eastside. EHS- R H E 350 RCHS R H E 0 10 (W) Slone (L)Addison Dahley Double Knocks off Spartans Senior lefty Dalton fanned 15 and junior Dakota cranked out two bombs leading the home standing Greenwave to a 4- 3 Cumberland Conference win. Clintwood now (7- 1,6-1) trails the Spartans (9-5,7-1) by just a half game in the conference race for the automatic bid to the regional tournament. Eastside grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the top of the FEst, scoring on a pair of throwing errors by Dakota who was in his first start behind the plate for Clintwood. The Spartans sent junior Matt Green to the mound who had defeat- ed Clintwood earlier in the year. Green hem the Wave in check through the first two frames but in the third Mike Mullins singled then Dakota Dahley sent his first home run out tying th e game at 2-2. The score was knotted till the top of the 5th when the Spartans scratched out a run to go ahead 3-2. With two out and Mullins" at second base in the bottom of the 5th inning Dakota stepped up big again taking Green's 1- 1 pitch deep over the left field fence putting Clintwood in front 4-3. Stallard Homer Lifts Spartans Deja Stallard smacked a three run home run in the bottom of the first inning and Lindsay Dean tossed a two- hitter leading the Lady SpartanS(11-1,7-0) to an 8-1 win over Castlewood's Lady Devils (6-5, 4-3) Wednesday at Eastside. Emily Higgins and Alanna Kiser each doubled for Castlewood plating the Devils run. Eastside tallied 4 runs in the first, three of those coming on the Stallard homer. The Lady Spartans tagged Castlewood pitcher Cassie Fleming for 4 more runs in the second inning. Dean. and Erin Stanley also had two hits for Eastside and K.atie Mullins doubled.
