Plans are coming together for what promises to be a very successful Seventh Annual Harold Lester Memorial Golf Tournament. Tournament organizers expect fifteen to eighteen teams to partici- pate in the event to be held Friday, June 2, at Lonesome Pine Country Club in Big Stone Gap. All proceeds will support the Harold Lester Memorial Fund o( the Mountain Laurel Cancer Support and Resource Center of Mountain Empire Older Citizens, Inc. The fund was estab- lished by Harold Lester's family after he lost his bat- tle with cancer. Family and friends wanted to find a way to honor his memory by helping others in need as a memorial to his devo- tion to caring for and assisting thousands of peo- ple during his lifetime. Mr. Lester spent much of his life working with children and their families through his career in the Wise County School System where he served as teacher, coach and administrator. Those who knew him remember a man with a strong Christian faith and a belief that one needed to take care of his .family, neighbors and others God placed in his path. This year, in addition to honoring the memory of Mr. Lester, the tournament will be especially in mem- ory of Larry Joe Hill, him- self a Wise County educa- tor, who was very instru- mental in the success of the tournament over the years. The Harold Lester Memorial Fund provides real help to cancer patients throughout the local com- munity who are experienc- ing unexpected needs as a result of their diagnosis of cancer. Every cent raised by the golf tournament will directly assist a cancer patient in Lee, Scott or Wise County or the City of Norton. Many lives will be touched and many needs met. The Harold Lester Fund has assisted with pur- chase of medications and materials for ramps needed to make homes accessible for cancer patients. The fund also pays rent, water bills and electric bills, because people undergoing cancer treatment often can- not continue to work. Those wishing to sup- port the tournament and thus the fund have several choices as to how they might participate as either a player, company sponsor or individual sponsor. All donations are tax deductible. For those who wish to honor a cancer sur- vivor or honor the memory of a loved one who fought the good fight but suc- cumbed, a hole sponsor- ship is a good way to do, this.
