SCOTT JESSEE - AGRICULTURE Weed of the Week: Poison Hemlock Poison Hemlock is known by many names: snake-weed, poison parsley, and poison stinkweed. Its lifecycle is similar to thistle - a biennial with a basal rosette during the first year and an erect branch the second year. Poison hemlock foliage resembles that of a carrot or parsley. The purple coloring on the stems and fern- like leaves are identifying characteristics. Flowers of poison hemlock resemble umbrellas with multiple small white blooms. All parts of the plant contain toxic alkaloids (including coniine) that can cause respiratory failure in humans and animals when ingested. It has been reported that dried plant stems can remain toxic for up to three years. Fortunately several her- bicide formulations are effective in controlling this species including 2,4-D, 2,4-D + Banvel, Redeem, and Grazon. Control is most effective when the plants are in the rosette stage (spread out on the ground like a plate) so treat early. For more information concerning weed control, please contact the Extension Office. Herbicides listed are for educational purposes only - others formulation may be equally effective. 4-H& Youth Development RUSSELL COUNTY 4-H Camp Registration Junior 4-H Camp, a long-standing Russell County tradition, will be held on July 17-21, 2017 at Southwest Virginia 4-H Educational Center in Abingdon.
