CLINCH VALLEY TIMES St. Paul, Va. Thursday, April 10, 2014 Page 7 Harsh Winter Prompts Need for Successful ME()C Walkathon Mountain Empire Older Citizens (MEOC) needs your help. Its 2014 Walkathon, which raises money for the Emergency Fuel Fund for the Elderly, is set for Sunday, May 4th. This year's event will be held at Union High School in Big Stone Gap and will begin at 2 P.M. MEOC Executive Director Michael Wampler is calling this one of the most important, urgent Walkathons ever. This winter, MEOC has assisted with a record number of 1,656 heat related emergencies. More older people than ever are finding them- selves in desperate need of assistance in keeping their homes warm, safe and secure. This winter's record-setting sub- zero temperatures coupled with snow and ice have caused electric bills to rapidly increase and heat resources, such as coal, gas, oil and wood, to vanish quickly. MEOC must have a very successful Walkathon to be able to keep pace with demand and assist all who are in need of assistance with weather related expenses• For the past thirty-eight years, con- cerned community members of all ages have gathered on the first Sunday after- noon in May for the annual Walkathon, the major fundraiser to assist older people trapped in weather related emergency situ- ations. Each year around this time, the Emergency Fuel Fund for the Elderly is running low on funds and MEOC and its community partners begin planning for this very important event, which will replenish the fund. Without the support and dedication of so many businesses, churches, civic groups, schools and indi- viduals throughout the three-county area, MEOC would not have an Emergency Fuel Fund for the Elderly. The Emergency Fuel Fund for the Elderly (EFF), a program of MEOC and the community, assists older people with emergency home-heating situations during the winter months• The program begins each year on October 1 st and ends the fol- lowing March 31st. The EFF assists peo- ple sixty (60) years of age or older in the Counties of Wise, Lee and Scott and the City of Norton. From the first of October 1, 2013 through March 20, 2014, the EFF assisted 1,656 emergency situations; this is an increase of 133 more emergency situa- tions than last winter• The EFF assists older people with low incomes who are in desperate need and who, for a variety of reasons, do not have the money to pay their home heating bills. The EFF assists older people who are facing life-threaten- ing situations through no fault of their own. Older people struggling to pay for the bare necessities on small retirement checks are having a very difficult time coping with the increased heating fuel prices. Often, the older person has high prescription drug and health care expenses not covered by a third party. A death or ill- ness in the family can also cause an emer- gency financial situation. Day-to-day liv- ing expenses are more than his or her monthly check can cover; income is sim- ply too small and stretched too thin. So far this winter, MEOC spent a record $258,057 keeping older friends, relatives and neighbors warm, safe and secure in their own homes. Every cent is spent for the intended purpose of assisting older people trapped in emergency home-heat- ing situations. Not one cent is spent for any other purpose. Funds for the Emergency Fuel Fund come solely from donations, contributions and fundraising events. This program receives no federal or state funding; it is supported solely by the community. It is not too late for your organization or business to become involved as a commu- nity sponsor. Those organizations and businesses contributing $5,000 or more will not only have their name and logo printed on the back of the MEOC Walkathon t-shirts; they Will be linked on MEOC's website and Facebook and can receive free advertising on MEOC buses. It is also never too late to get involved as a walker in the Walkathon or as a sponsor of someone else walking. Make plans now to join the community on Sunday, May 4th, at 2 p.m. at Union High School for the 38th Annual MEOC Walkathon to benefit the Emergency Fuel Fund for the Elderly. People of all ages from all across southwest Virginia will gather at the front of the high school to participate in a 10 kilometer walk (6.2 miles) with the goal of raising $165,000. A celebration picnic is held immediately following the Walkathon and everyone who raises at least $100 is awarded a Walkathon t-shirt. To participate as a walker, contact MEOC to get your pledge form. Walkathon forms will be immedi- ately sent to you so that you can begin col- lecting your pledges. If you are unable to walk, but vould like to support the cause, your contribution can be sent to MEOC, P.O. Box 888, Big Stone Gap, VA 24219. Please designate your contribution for the EFF/Walkathon program. Everyone can help spread the word by telling family, friends, and neigh- bors about this event. In case of inclement weather, the walk will be postponed and rescheduled for Sunday, May 18th. The postponement will be announced on all local radio stations. If in doubt, call MEOC. There will be staff at the MEOC office taking phone calls on Walkathon day. For more information about how to get involved in this year's Walkathon or how to become a community sponsor, contact MEOC at 276-523-4202 or 1-800-252- 6362. Buy, sell, notify, employ, through...
