Anyone can receive Conservation Trees, a user-friendly booklet featuring illustra- tions, colorful photos and easily-understood descriptions, by making a $3 donation to the Foundation this month. "Conservation Trees is an ideal resource for tree planters," said John Rosenow, founder and chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. "Taking care of existing trees is just as critical as planting new ones, and proper care ensures communities are able to fully enjoy the diverse benefits of urban forestry." The booklet provides details about the right way to plant and prune trees. It also includes tips on using shade trees and windbreaks to save on energy costs, attract song- birds and create a living snow fence. To receive the Conservation Trees booklet, send a $3 check along with your name and address to: Conservation Trees, Arbor Day Foundation," 100 Arbor Ave., Nebraska City, NE 68410, or order online at arborday.org/conservationtrees. During the worship ser- vice at Fort Gibson United Methodist Church, Bill Ring of Castlewood, Virginia was recognized by Sandy Cozzolino for receiving a lifetime award from the Quilts of Valor Foundation. Bill is a World War II veteran who served his county overseas with honor and pride. In a surprise ceremony on March 26, at the home of Sue Lambert, daughter, Bill was awarded a Quilt of Valor by Susan Lane, State Coordinator for the Southern Appalachian Quilts of Valor Quilters. Bill's Quilt of Valor is a token of appreciation and gratitude saying, "Thank you for your service, sacri- fice, and valor." The Quilts of Valor Foundation began in 2003 'by a Delaware mother whose son was serving our country in a year-long deployment in Iraq. Since then, the foundation has grown nationwide with more than 100,000 Quilts of Valor awarded to our veterans and service mem- bers. These quilts are stitched and quilted by groups of volunteers. Sandy Cozzolino, Sonnie Tomlinson and Lind~ Byerley, all of Castlewood', are volunteers of the Virginia Highlands Quilts of Valor in Abingdon, VA'. !
