Russell sign-up April 4 for Pre-k, kindergarten All elementary schools in Russell County will be taking applications for the voluntary Title-1 four- year-old program (Pre-K) and registering kinder- garten students for the 2014-2015 school year on April 4, 2014 from 9:00 A.M. until ll:30A.M. It is very important that you enroll your child for the above programs on that date so that the schools can adequately prepare for the number of enrollees. If you cannot attend on the given date, please call the school to make arrangements to enroll your child as soon as possible. To be eligible for the Pre-K program, a student must be four years of age by September 30, 2014. Students that reach their fifth birthday by September 30, 2014, must enroll in kindergarten. Kindergarten is a required program for students who are five years of age by September 30, 2014. All Russell County Schools will have Pre-K and Kindergarten registra- tion on April 4, 2014. To register, a parent must come to the school that their child will attend and complete all necessary paperwork. Parents should bring the childfs birth cer- tificate, social security card, immunizatiorl record and a completed physical examination form (MCH 213G). Immunizations against mumps, rubella, measles, German measles, whooping cough, tetanus, diphtheria, polio, Hepatitis B, and chicken pox are required. All students are required to have a physical examination before they can enter school. Parents are encouraged to make every effort to have the childis physical prior to the registration date, so that the child can be officially registered. CAPTIVATED ... The Dickenson-Bundy Log House is now open for its 2014 season. Robins are singing, crocuses popping up, and customers are pop- ping in to purchase hand- made Southwest Mirginia craft items. Since its restoration in the 1970's, the Dickenson- Bundy Log House has pro- vided a venue for local craftspeople and artisans to market their wares. It is capably managed by Elaine Robinson under the aus- pices of the Russell County Board of Supervisors in cooperation with the Historical Society of Russell County. Each year many tourists visit and pur- chase unique gift items to take back home with them. Their purchases provide a direct benefit to vendors while spreading knowledge and appreciation of the cul- ture of the Appalachian region. There is also a very strong need for inex- pensive items which can be purchased by children as gifts or souvenirs of their visit. Such items sell extremely well. Spring is the prime sell- ing season at the Dickenson-Bundy Log House Two major public events will take place at the Old Russell County Courthouse in May and June. Each event is sure to attract numerous craft cus- tomers. To encourage new and returning crafters to exhibit their wares during this time, No consignment fee will be required between now and June 1st. NO ENTRIES will be taken after practice on Monday, April 7. Practice will take place Monday, April 7 beginning at 5 pm in the auditorium of CHS. Kindergarten registra- tion for the 2014-2015 school year will be held in all Wise County Public Schools that house a Kindergarten program (Appalachia Elementary, J.W. Adams Combined, Coeburn Primary, Powell Valley Primary, St. Paul Elementary and Wise Primary) on Friday, April 18, 2014 from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Children applying for Kindergarten must be five years old on or before September 30, 2014. Parents/Guardians need to bring the following items to Kindergarten reg- istration: Certified copy of the child's birth certificate (your child can be pre-reg- istered without a certified copy of his or her birth cer- tificate); Child's Social Security card; and Immunization record. Parents are encouraged to complete the registration form and begin the regis- tration process even though they may not have all the above required forms and documentation. The child must have a physical examination with- in one year before entering school.
