CLINCH VALLEY TIMES St. Paul, Va. Thursday, March 10, 2016 Page 3 Russell County Emergency Management receives grant to contract with CodeRED to provide emergency notification services Following an extensive grant process and thorough evaluation of alerting sys- tems, Russell County Emergency Management has implemented the CodeRED system, a high- speed emergency notWlca- tion service provided by Ormond Beach, FL-based Emergency Communications Network. The CodeRED system will serve as the backbone of the Russell County Emergency Management's emergency planning and communications outreach to both citizens and Russell County emergency response personnel by using the system capabili- ties to send telephone calls, text messages, emails and social media messages in an effort to effectively inform residents to protect life and property. CodeRED was selected for its reliability and accuracy, as well as the system's global use. "CodeRED's system will provide Russell County Emergency Management officials with a reliable, easy-to-use interface to quickly dis- seminate critical informa- tion to our citizens during emergencies. We are very eager to use this technolo- gy to enhance our emer- gency preparedness plans," said Jess Powers, Emergency Management Coordinator. Russell County Emergency Management anticipates using the system to notify residents in the county or specific geographic loca- tions within the county for wildfires, floods, winter storms, tornadoes, high winds, power outages, and missing adults and children notices. Russell County Emergency Management has been provided an ini- tial database of residential and business telephone numbers, however all resi- dents living within Russell County limits are encour- aged to visit http://www.russellcounty- va.us/index.php/govern- ment/county-administra- tion/emergency-manage- ment and click on the "Sign Up" button to enroll additional contact informa- tion including cell phone numbers, text, and email addresses. No one should automatically assume they are in the emergency con- tact database unless they go to the website and com- plete the "Sign Up" form. Public safety officials across the United States have credited CodeRED notifications for many suc- cessful events including locating missing children, apprehending wanted criminals, and issuing timely wamings and evac- uations.
