Properly worki The LENOWISCO Health District's Unintentional Injury Prevention program includes the "Get Alarmed, Virginia!" smoke alarm program. The Health District was the recipient of a state-secured federal grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The program is designed to assist in lowering state fire injury, death and loss of property via the installation of smoke alarms and delivery of public fire and life safety education. The grant provides for installation" of ten-year lithium battery smoke alarms to individuals and families who meet eligibility criteria. The "Get Alarmed, Virgi- nia!" program provides free smoke alarms, along with in- stallations, to 80 households in Lee, Scott and Wise counties, and the City of Norton. In addit- ion to smoke alarms, recipients receive education in ftre preven- tion tactics and escape planning. The distribution of alarms is spearheaded by Tipton Flee- nor, RADA Weatherization Pro- gram Estimator. The RADA Weatherization Program targets households that meet certain low income guidelines. For smoke alarms, priority is given to senior citizens, including those with a physical handicap or chronic heart or lung ail- ments, living in homes needing weatherization improvements. Many of the households selected quality for fuel assistance, and are often found to be using alternative heating sources such as coal or wood stoves. Often young children are present in these households along with elderly residents. In Virginia, a new fire occurs about once every 15 minutes. Each year, fire kills an average of 100 men, women and child- ren in Virginia and causes more smoke alarms can save lives. In 2007 the National Fire Preven- tion Association examined e use of residential smoke alarms in the United States. The study found that most all households in the U.S. have at least ofie smoke alarm, yet in 2000-200,1, no smoke alarms were present or none operated in almost hlf (46 percent) of the report+d home fires. During the same period, 43 percent of all home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarm, while 22 percent resulted from homes in which smoke alarms were present but did not operate. More than half (54 per- cent) of the smoke alarm fafl- ures were due to missing or disconnected batteries; 19 per- cent were due to dead batteries. Test your smoke alarms today.
