Thursday, January 12, 2017 Eastside opens Cumberland play with sweep of Castlewood ELIZA EVANS SPORTS WRITER COEBURN - Eastside started Cumberland Conference play Tuesday, Jan. 3, with a sweep of Castlewood. The Lady Spartans picked up a 65-34 win and the Spartans capped the night with a 72- 29 rout of the Blue Devils. "I don't think Castlewood shot the ball well tonight. I think we caught them on an off night," said Eastside boys coach Patrick Damron. "I thought tonight, our offense looked good and our defense played solid." Ethan Powers led the Spartans (8-3, 1-0) in scor- ing with 19 points. Luke Lawson was next with 17 points. Lawson also had seven rebounds, five blocks and three assists. Seth Boles also scored in double figures, 10 points, with six rebounds and five assists. Nick Livingston bad six rebounds, three steals and three assists while Blake Rhoten pulled down seven rebounds. Castlewood (4-9, 0-1) was led by Trey Phillips' 10 points. No other player had more than five points. : "We need to rebound ,r - xtd we've got to make ~ore shots," said Blue ~t~e' vils head coach Casey Johnson. "We've got to box out and rebound and make more shots through- out the game. We had plen- ty of open shots and failed to knock those down." The Blue Devils stayed with the Spartans early, trailing by only one, 11-10, iafter two free throws from i Jacob Baker with 2:09 left fin the first quarter. The Spartans responded ;with a 6-0 run to end the ~first and a 13-0 to start the '.second quarter. The Blue Devils found themselves down by 20 points, 30-10, before scor- ing their first points of the second quarter with just over three minutes left in the half. At halftime, the Spartans were up by 2! points, 38-17, and contin- ued the rout in the second half as the Devils scored only three points in the fourth quarter. LADY SPARTANS ROLL The Lady Spartans (5-6, 1-0) started the game with a 12-0 run and led 23-4 by the end of the period. But the Lady Devils put up a fight in the second quarter. "We played well in the first quarter, but then let them back in it and lost the second quarter," said Lady Spartans coach Barry Ruff. "We have to play hard no matter what the score is." A basket by Hannah Ingle with almost five min- utes left - in the half trimmed the deficit back to 10 points, 24-14. Ingle fin- ished the game with 12 points, including three 3- pointers. "In the second quarter, we got the momentum," said Lady Devils head coach Tiffany Austin. "My girls got up, they hit their open shots. They started playing hard." But the Lady Devils would get no closer. The Lady Spartans took a 35-19 lead into halftime and pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring the Lady Devils 21-6. Kaylee Jones had a dou- ble-double for the Lady Spartans with 15 points and 14 rebounds. Hannah Wyrick led the Lady Spartans with 16 points. Carrie Boyd had 14 rebounds to go with five points. Riley McCoy pulled down 10 rebounds. Tori Stevens had four assists and nine points and Kaylee Yates had four steals. The tournament is open for boys grades 4-5, 6-7, and 8-9. Co-ed teams will be allowed in the 2-3 divi- sion.Tournament is well organized with VHSL ref- erees and excellent gyms.
